In the Operating Room

In addition to plastic medical aids and electronic equipment used during surgery, plastics are an essential component of many life-saving surgical procedures – such as vascular repair where shunts, balloons, and plastic-coated devices are often used. Plastics have replaced titanium for cranial bone replacement and are used for a wide range of joint replacements. They are so adaptable they can be used as synthetic bone; to replace skin, tendons, cartilage; and even as artificial cornea to help restore sight.
