Vinyl Sustainability Management Program (SMP)

What It Is

The Goal of the VCC SMP is to achieve sustainability in the vinyl sector by respecting the interdependence of economic, environmental and social well-being in all aspects of our business

SMP participants commit to responsible product development, manufacturing and distribution by:

  • Operating safely; targeting zero injuries.
  • Minimizing impact on the environment; optimizing resource consumption while  targeting zero emissions and waste.
  • Implementing the SMP successfully with ongoing risk reduction, measurement and continuous improvement demonstrated through performance.
  • Applying sound science and technology in decision making.
  • Respecting all stakeholders through ongoing and open dialogue.
  • Sharing relevant EHS information with stakeholders.

As part of this commitment, SMP participants will provide information and support to all parties to ensure responsible use of our products throughout their life-cycle, including ultimate disposal.

Business Rationale

FLOW OF BENEFITS TO COMPANIES & SECTOR FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE SMP

  1. Demonstrates responsible business practices and reduces risk
  2. Saves $ by reducing resource use and minimizing waste
  3. Creates competitive advantage & growth 4) Avoids unnecessary regulations & de-selection, via increased sector credibility with stakeholders
  4. Achieves industry sustainability
  1. Responsible approach - Companies that adopt responsible business practices and reduce risk have positive relationships with stakeholders such as the community, employees, shareholders, bankers and insurers. These activities help maintain a companys social license to operate.
  2. Cost savings - There are direct financial benefits from using less energy, less water, less raw material, generating less scrap and waste, and having fewer negative incidents.
  3. Competitive advantage - Being, and being seen to be, sustainable is increasingly a determining factor in getting business. Customers want or need to demonstrate that their upstream value chain has a small (and getting smaller) environmental footprint. This business imperative will drive greener products, which will also grow your business and the industry. The SMP is a vehicle to instill a culture of sustainability within your company.
  4. Less regulation - Vinyl industry credibility has already been a key factor in avoiding unnecessary regulatory action and de-selection. Extending the SMP throughout the sector is needed to strengthen our influence in countering current and future threats. SMP participation will give regulators confidence that this sustainability culture reaches broadly throughout the sector and will survive leadership change.
  5. Vinyl sector sustainability - The cumulative effect of our behaviour, performance and life cycle data will inform stakeholders, leading to public acceptance of the vinyl industry as a sustainable sector, which is key for future growth.
